Current residency: The Magpie
The Magpie, continues the artist’s painting practice, which explores non-literal mapping: the belief that life is navigated through internal maps shaped by memory, experience, love and loss.
This latest body of work by Dominic McCourt considers how symbols can begin to function as substitute points of orientation, for our internal maps, in the absence the people that shape our lives emotionally and directionally. A significant symbol for the artist appeared after the passing of his mother, an event which caused a profound sense of dislocation. Over time, the magpie became a symbolic representation of her, appearing at moments of uncertainty, transition or reassurance.
This solo-exhibition, with 70 Square Meters, is an exploration of grief, and what happens to our internal maps when one of its primary reference points is removed.
